LEE VUE
Trip Leader — USA
Lee Vue is a Hmong American environmental advocate and leader who has spent much of her life on rivers and trails—paddling, portaging, and reminding others that discomfort is often part of discovery. From the Boundary Waters to rivers that carve through entire countries, she has led groups into the wilderness with a focus on BIPOC communities stepping into these spaces for the first time. For Lee, guiding is less about the miles traveled and more about creating spaces of safety, belonging, and joy in places where people may never have imagined themselves. Her trips carry laughter, challenge, and reflection—grounded in the belief that the outdoors is not just a destination, but a living relationship that asks us to listen, care, and reciprocate.
Beyond the canoe, Lee serves on nonprofit boards, facilitates community listening sessions, and coaches leaders through moments of transition. Across all of her roles, she carries the same values: inclusion, stewardship, and care. Her work is rooted in the idea that wild places hold memory, healing, and possibility—that a river can carry both ancestors and new beginnings. Whether hauling gear across a portage, holding space for a difficult conversation, or capturing a sunrise through her lens, Lee shows up to connect people to land, water, and one another—with courage, compassion, and heart.

SHEILA KOFAHL
Trip Leader — USA

LIZ MACNEIL
Trip Leader — USA & International
Although Liz was born and raised in the mountains of North Carolina, she comes from a long line of seafarers and grew up with a keen desire to be on the water. And after she experienced her first paddling trip at the age of 11, Liz was hooked! She knew right then and there that she wanted to be a guide. At Sierra Nevada College, Liz excelled as a whitewater guide and skier, which catapulted her into the world of outdoor leadership. Since 2003, Liz has been professionally leading trips and has traveled to more than 40 countries around the world. Her diverse experiences have not only fueled her passion for adventure travel and sustainability, but have instilled in her the importance of introducing people to the unique, natural wonders of the world and the people who live in it.
JANET SCALZO
Trip Leader – USA & International
With a passion for female empowerment, an endless sense of curiosity, and over thirty years of experience in the travel industry, Janet found herself innately drawn to Canyon Calling’s mission. She followed the call of her adventuresome spirit and acquired the company back in 2014. And she’s been leading it with vigor ever since!
For Janet, it’s all about connection — with her wonderful guests and with the locals. She appreciates and desires to connect with local cultures around the world, and this global mindset enriches every tour she leads. Her hospitable nature, extensive experience and knowledge, and dedication to safety will keep you in excellent care — and laughing all the way!
“Growing up, I wanted to see what was around every bend in the road – I still do! I want to meet the people that live there, taste the food, experience the culture, and celebrate our differences and commonalities. I’ve had tremendous opportunities to do this around the world, and now I am sharing the sheer joy of local, personalized adventures with women who are curious and consider themselves global citizens. I learned that connecting with the locals is the essence of any travel experience — so all of our trips ensure this vital element.”

JOSELYN FENSTERMACHER
Trip Leader — USA
Joselyn took her first international trip solo at age 13, and since then has been interested in exploring the world and learning about her surroundings. Transformative, hands-on college study abroad experiences in Ecuador and Tanzania led to an itinerant career as a seasonal field-biologist across the US. Her master’s degree in botany informs how she sees the world and her educator’s heart drives her to share her knowledge and enthusiasm for the natural world in an engaging way. Searching for isolated and remote places has led her to all seven continents and continues to call her back home to the wilds of Western Texas. In addition to being involved in several ongoing community advocacy projects, she works locally as a guide and internationally aboard expedition ships to Antarctica and other intriguing locations. Joselyn is passionate about learning more about the world around her and hopes to inspire this same spark, empowering women to ask questions and think big.
ALEJANDRA IBARROLA
Trip Leader — USA & Mexico
Alejandra was born and raised in Mexico City and has been an ocean lover since her early childhood. After gaining a degree in Tourism, she moved to the Caribbean, where she learned to scuba dive; a passion that soon became a career, leading her to work in 5 continents as a scuba instructor. In 2016 Alejandra moved to Baja California Sur, Mexico, where she expanded her horizons to kayaking, camping and hiking in the islands, the desert, and the mountains of this corner of the world she now fondly calls home. Alejandra loves working as a guide and interpreter because it gives her a chance to share with others the beauty and perfection I find in nature and to promote respect for the environment while having fun. “I believe women need to stand together and magic happens when they do. Facilitating and testifying that, empowers me and other women to be agents of change towards a healthier social and natural environment. “ During her free time, apart from the outdoors, Alejandra enjoys learning about self development, painting and writing, music, yoga, reading and learning languages.

“As I fall back in my day-to-day, it will give me satisfaction just knowing that somewhere on this spinning planet there is a marvelous guide leading a group of women to a beautiful place – and it will make their hearts soar! The sights that I have seen on these trips are surpassed only by the wonderful spirits surrounding them.”
“Your trips give me the opportunity to laugh like a little girl! Swimming in Emerald Lake, lying on a glacier, laughing till my sides hurt – these are the things I will remember always.”
“My word for this trip was trust. We trusted one another with our challenges and our hearts. From the full moon in Canyon de Chelly to sloshing up the Narrows – I feel so lucky to be part of this great cosmic experience!”
“Your trips are top notch adventures that are all about getting in touch with the many facets of Nature’s splendor while doing something special for one’s self. We’ve camped really comfortably in Southwest canyons and hiked, biked and ridden horses and jeeps. Every day is a new activity which makes for a great vacation.”
“Words cannot begin to describe what the last ten days have been for me. The energy and expertise you put into every aspect of the trip allowed me to let go and just be. The camaraderie of the women, the chance NOT to be in charge while at the same time completely trusting the hands of whom I write, all while laughing till my sides burst – well my soul is FULL!”
