October is our favorite month to visit Oregon! We’ll enjoy outdoor adventures along with great food & wine tastings. No journey to Oregon is complete without experiencing the natural beauty of both land and sea. Oregon’s soil produces amazing fruits and vegetables, like grapes that are turned into wine and hops for brewing beer. The ocean provides sustainably caught crab and tuna. They grow hazelnuts and marion berries and exotic mushrooms. And there’s no better way to taste all this goodness than by eating it where it comes from. Come join us on this new tour – and yes, it is a ‘softer’ adventure. A more relaxed pace with more comfort built in while featuring fun filled activities that make this a great vacation!
Arrive in Portland by mid afternoon and get checked into our hotel. We’ll all meet in the hotel lobby at 4.00pm and enjoy a walking tour of Portland. This award-winning tour highlights why Portland is regularly recognized as “one of the best places to live”. We will hear about early and modern Portland as our guide shows us an enlightened city rich with artwork, parks, bridges, downtown trains & streetcars, fountains, the blossoming food cart scene, and friendly people. We’ll enjoy a delicious welcome dinner at one of the many splendid Portland restaurants.
After breakfast, we’re on to a combination bike and hike excursion. We’ll pack a picnic lunch and jump into the van and drive 45 minutes to the Historic Columbia River Highway, completed in 1915. On the way we’ll stop at the most photographed scenic vistas in the Gorge before unloading the bikes for our ride. This easy 10-mile ride gives us a sense of what it was like to travel along the first National Scenic Highway in the nation through the Gorge before construction of the interstate highway. We’ll stop for short hikes to waterfalls and may even glimpse some of the native birds of prey such as osprey and bald eagles. We’ll head back to Portland, then we’re off to the coast! A relaxing drive brings us to Depoe Bay and Inn at the Arch, a gem of a hotel, for our two-night stay. Dinner tonight is at one of our favorites, Tidal Raves.
After breakfast we’ll enjoy Whale Watching! Dubbed as the “Whale Watching Capital of the Oregon Coast”, Depoe Bay has whale watching almost year around. We are then off to Newport, an historic coastal city that caters to all ages and interests – and is the “Dungeness Crab Capital of the World”! We’ll visit Bayfront, a working fishing port and home to a variety of shops and restaurants, one of which we will enjoy our lunch at. A beautiful drive inland takes us to the quaint university town of Corvallis for a wine tasting on the river – one of Willamette Valley’s wonderful Pinot Noirs! Drive back to Depoe Bay for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, we’ll enjoy an invigorating two-hour hike along the rugged Oregon coast. This is a great way to enjoy the beautiful scenery, look for whales, and watch the seals and other coastal wildlife in their natural habitat. We’ll stop for lunch on our drive to historic downtown McMinnville, in the Yamhill County wine region of Oregon’s lush Willamette Valley. We’ll wander the streets of McMinnville where we’ll find famous winery’s tasting rooms within easy walking distance, as well as a foodie scene that has been heralded internationally. Boutique shops abound. We’ll check into The Flats for our two-night stay and enjoy dinner and each other’s company at one of the many fabulous restaurants.
It’s a leisurely rise today with a late breakfast and the morning free to enjoy this charming community of McMinnville. Sprinkled throughout downtown McMinnville are restored, turn-of-the-century buildings reinvented as unique shops, among other things. We’ll meet late morning in the hotel lobby and leave for Left Coast Cellars wine tasting and picnic lunch. This unforgettable experience includes a 3 wine tasting flight poured amidst the vines during this one hour tour of their estate, concluding with a barrel tasting in the winery, and followed by a delicious picnic lunch. We’ll head back downtown to McMinnville with a stop at the Willamette Valley Tasting room for another tasting. We’ll enjoy our farewell dinner at La Rambla, another one of our favorite restaurants!
After breakfast, we’ll transfer back to Portland airport for flights home. Suggested flight departure time of noon or later.
